A military tartan that takes its name from the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, that was first raised in 1725. nicknamed the Black Watch because of its role in policing or ‘watching’ the Highlands in case of insurrection, the regiment is known today as The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland.
